My name is Kristy Griggs, and I am the founder and President of Training Through Treatment.
In April of 2021 I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer – also known as Stage 4 Breast Cancer. As a metastatic breast cancer patient, I was told that not only was I not a candidate for surgery, but in all honesty, my prognosis wasn’t great.
At only 37, and a single mother to an incredible 7-year-old boy that happens to be autistic – I knew that dying was not an option. This was simply not where my story was going to end.
After a brutal course of chemo that I firmly believe I only survived due to daily exercise, in September of 2021 I was declared to have “no evidence of disease”. I even found a surgeon willing to perform a mastectomy – if I remained NED for one year.
Unfortunately, 10 months later, scans showed recurrence. The cancer had returned.
I was no longer considered a candidate for surgery. I was told I would immediately begin a new line of chemo, and remain on it until it stops working - at which time I will immediately begin another line of treatment.
And so on and so forth.
I will remain "in treatment" forever. However, my scans still show that I am NED. And I believe that is at least partially due to my dedication to vigorous physical activity.
I believe everyone battling cancer should have the opportunity to do more than sit and get pumped full of chemo. I believe that if given access to vigorous physical activity such as spin classes, more women and men battling metastatic cancers would live longer, healthier and possibly progression-free lives.
I was determined to not let this have happened in vain. I believe fitness is helping keep me alive. I believe it so much, I realized I needed to find a way to bring fitness to everyone battling metastatic cancer.
Possibly more importantly, I want to research the correlation between vigorous physical activity (such as spin) and progression-free survival in cases of metastatic cancer. To date there have been countless case studies, but there has not been one clinical trial. That needs to change.
I came up with a plan, and shared it with my dear friends Lisa Mikelson and Gail Gray of GritCycle. They told me if I built it, we would have the support of GritCycle behind us.
And less than a year later - Training Through Treatment was born.
